Community Development

With its carefully planned growth and emphasis on conservation and preservation of natural resources, Lake in the Hills is a remarkable example of what a well-planned city can be. Lake in the Hills is a fully mobilized community with its own municipal water district, sanitary district and refuse and recycling services. The Community Development Department is very active in the growth and well being of the village. The local parks and recreation department offers activities and programs year-round for children, families and community members alike.

Location

Although Lake in the Hills boasts its own airport, it is only 45 miles away from O’Hare International Airport. The village is also readily accessible by the Union Pacific railroad line. Chicago is 47 miles southwest – easily reached by car on the I-90, just 8 miles away. The city’s PACE transit system offers low-cost transportation for all residents during the weekdays throughout the city.

Education

Lake in the Hills also offers a strong educational system. Students are served by Community Unit School District 300. In higher education offerings, nearby McHenry County College and Elgin Community College offer both undergraduate coursework for post-secondary students and continuing education programs.

Amenities

Despite its charm and appearance of a small country town, Lake in the Hills offers modern convenience in the way of an abundance of shopping centers and at least three major hospitals with additional urgent care centers available within minutes.

Recreation

Lake in the Hills offers not one, but four lakes as its namesake: Goose Lake, Willow Lake, Lake Scott and Woods Creek Lake. Recreational and entertainment options abound, as the city’s lakes provide excellent swimming, fishing and boating opportunities. In the winter months, the four lakes are havens for ice skating and ice fishing. Parks abound in the city, providing venues for youth and adult sports, recreation and fitness activities.
